The trust between Singapore’s political leaders and the people, as well as among Singaporeans themselves, is a crucial asset that must be continuously nurtured, said President Halimah Yacob in Parliament on April 10. She highlighted that when trust breaks down, societies often face deep divides that are difficult to heal.

Halimah noted that in some societies, political parties aggravate rifts by appealing to competing groups, leading to gridlock and a loss of faith in government institutions. She stressed that Singapore must avoid such pitfalls.

Constructive Conversations for Singapore

While diverse views are inevitable in an open society, these must be debated constructively, with respect and responsibility, said President Halimah. She emphasized that conversations must be rooted in mutual trust and aimed at advancing the public interest.

Reflecting on Founders’ Values

Halimah called for Singaporeans to reflect on the values of the founding generation as the country commemorates the centenary of Lee Kuan Yew’s birth. She urged citizens to uphold shared values while adapting them to meet the challenges of the future.

Strengthening Trust with 4G Leadership

The president praised the 4G leadership team, noting that they proved their resilience during the Covid-19 crisis. She emphasized the importance of the 4G leaders continuing to strengthen their bond with Singaporeans, adding that the Forward Singapore exercise has helped engage over 14,000 citizens in recent months.

Navigating a Troubled World

Halimah warned that Singapore is entering an increasingly troubled global environment, citing the war in Ukraine, U.S.-China rivalry, and growing geopolitical tensions. She urged Singapore to remain nimble and proactive in maintaining strong international partnerships and protecting its independence.

Maintaining Economic Strength

As global competition intensifies, Singapore must remain agile, connected, and adaptable, said Halimah. The country should focus on fostering talent, attracting foreign expertise, and entrenching its position as a global business hub.

A Shared Responsibility

Halimah stressed that while government action is important, it should not lead to a sense of dependency. Instead, Singaporeans must work together with businesses, civil society, and an active citizenry to contribute to nation-building.

Ultimately, the president said, a refreshed social compact will help Singapore navigate its next phase of nationhood, ensuring that the country remains united and resilient.
