In Parliament on July 6, 2023, Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh expressed concern over the Singapore National Olympic Council’s (SNOC) decision to exclude long-distance runner Soh Rui Yong from national representation, describing the council’s actions as “petty.” Singh’s comments came in support of a Workers’ Party (WP) motion advocating for clear and achievable goals for sporting success in Singapore.

Soh was omitted from the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, after the SNOC cited his “disparaging and derisive remarks” about others in public forums. The council pointed to a 30-page document detailing various issues, including Soh’s social media comments and his criticism of former teammate Ashley Liew.

Despite Soh’s past controversies, Singh called for a more forgiving approach from the SNOC, stating, “His latest non-selection will seriously curtail his ability to run and medal for Singapore ever again.” He emphasized that the current situation makes everyone involved appear different from their true selves and urged the SNOC to reconsider its decision.

While acknowledging the SNOC’s significant contributions to Singapore sports, Singh argued that the council’s handling of the Soh matter has led to public perception of pettiness. He urged the council to learn from past mistakes and give Soh another chance, reiterating that the council has historically shown leniency to other athletes with transgressions.

Soh, who has expressed hope for a reversal of the SNOC’s decision, stated in a recent interview that he was not allowed to clarify his posts during the appeals process. He remains eager to prove himself on the track and aims to be more cautious in his future conduct.

Singh also noted that there is a widespread belief that Soh’s exclusion stems from his previous dispute with Liew, suggesting that the SNOC’s actions appear personal. He urged the SNOC to adopt a more constructive attitude and to move on from past grievances, warning against a situation where Singapore sports undermines its own progress due to personal conflicts.
