SINGAPORE — Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh recently addressed the growing reality of ageing in Singapore, particularly the rise in dementia cases, in a Facebook post. He noted that many families will have to face this issue in the coming years.

“The reality of Singapore’s ageing population trend is that by 2030, it is estimated one in four people will be aged over 65 years. The number of families with a loved one with cognitive function disability will rise,” he wrote.

He emphasized that many caregivers looking after those with cognitive disabilities, such as dementia, often inspire with their dedication and selflessness, though caregiving can take a toll on their well-being.

In support of these caregivers, Mr Singh announced a giveaway of concert tickets to a musical aimed at raising public awareness of dementia and offering caregivers a chance for self-care. The musical, titled Living with Lucy, will take place in February 2023 and is designed to provide insight into the experience of living with dementia.

“Are you a caregiver of a loved one or patient who suffers from a cognitive disability like dementia? Do make some time for self-care when the opportunity arises. I have some concert tickets for LIVING WITH LUCY (for shows on 24 or 25 February 2023) that I would like to give away. Please reach out for a pair of tickets if you are the caregiver of a person with a cognitive disability,” Mr Singh posted.

Those interested in the tickets can email Mr Singh at secretary@leaderoftheopposition.sg while tickets last.

He also shared that the program aims to equip caregivers, family members, and volunteers with knowledge about dementia and the mindset of those who suffer from it. The initiative will be launched this year by the Family Business Network (FBN) Asia, the Inner Wheel Club of Singapore West, and The Mind Science Centre (MSC) at NUHS.
