Mediacorp actress Rebecca Lim joyfully announced on September 12 that she is 18 weeks, or around 4.5 months, into her first pregnancy. Unlike many who share their news around the three-month mark, Lim, 37, chose to wait longer. “I didn’t want it to be a stressful situation,” she explained, reflecting on her initial hesitations due to some pain and bleeding in the early stages. “I wanted to wait until the pregnancy was a lot more stable to share this with everyone.”
The news was bittersweet for Lim, as she discovered her pregnancy shortly after her father’s passing in May, while she was isolating due to a positive Covid-19 test. After confirming the pregnancy with an at-home test, she shared it with her sister and husband and later, after a visit to the gynecologist, told the rest of her family.
With her baby expected right before the Chinese New Year in early 2024, Lim considers herself lucky to have had manageable symptoms so far, avoiding severe morning sickness. “Of course, there’s no escaping morning sickness entirely, but I haven’t had it as bad,” she shared. Her cravings have been predictable—lots of rice and noodles—but the most specific craving is her mother’s mee soto, which her mother lovingly prepared from scratch.
When asked what kind of mother she envisions herself to be, Lim laughed, admitting that her friends’ intense focus on enrichment classes and activities might influence her. “It’s a struggle wanting to provide your child with an enjoyable childhood while feeling the need to fulfill your parental responsibilities,” she said, hoping to strike a balance as she steps into motherhood.
Despite a busy work schedule filled with events for her upcoming movie, Confinement, Lim has managed her workload but finds dressing for public appearances challenging. “I can’t fit into the samples anymore, and before I was ready to share the news, we had to find outfits to camouflage the bump,” she noted.
Lim plans to take a short break after the baby arrives, with a few months dedicated to her confinement. Looking ahead, she and her husband will hold a private gender reveal with family, though she admits it’s hard not to sneak a peek at the result. “We wanted this moment as a family,” Lim said, sharing that her brother will be the first to know as he prepares a special cake for the occasion.
While she once had a slight preference for a boy or girl, she said the challenges of the early pregnancy have shifted her perspective. “Now, I just feel grateful. As long as it’s a healthy baby, that’s what matters most.”
