SINGAPORE — On Wednesday (Jan 25), The Straits Times published an article titled, “‘The noise is terrible’: Residents say the quality of life affected by North-South Corridor construction.” In the report, several residents shared their frustrations over the construction noise, which has disrupted their daily lives.

One 24-year-old resident, who works from home, described having to “deal with the pounding and whirring of machines” all day. He called the noise “terrible,” explaining that he has resorted to closing his windows and curtains in an attempt to block out the sound.

For two educators living on Thomson Road, the situation is even more challenging. The couple, who have a baby and a six-year-old son with a sensory processing disorder, said that the noise is especially distressing for their son, making it feel even louder. They’ve had to pay to soundproof their baby’s room to cope with the constant disruption.

Local businesses in the area have also been affected, with some reporting a drop in customers, while others have seen an increase in traffic congestion due to the ongoing works.

Netizens responding to the article voiced their own concerns and frustrations. One commenter shared, “As I am typing this, the whirring construction noise is in the air… So irritating because I cannot rest properly or take a nap in the day if I’m not feeling well.”

Another individual noted that they had given feedback to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) regarding traffic control at major junctions during peak hours but expressed frustration at the lack of response: “The worst thing is I gave feedback to LTA… they are so stubborn.”

While some acknowledged the inconvenience, they highlighted that it’s a temporary disruption. One netizen commented, “Get used to it… this is Singapore where construction works are NEVER ending…” Another wrote, “Nothing much can do, they have timelines to complete, if not, they will be fined.”

The North-South Corridor is Singapore’s longest Transit Priority Corridor and is designed to provide a direct connection between the Northern region and the city center. It will feature bus lanes, cycling routes, and footpaths. Construction started in 2018 and is expected to be completed by 2026 or 2027, but for now, residents affected by the works continue to document their struggles, including one who took to TikTok to share his experiences.
