The government introduced new property cooling measures on Sept. 29 to moderate housing demand and ensure prudent borrowing amidst rising interest rates. However, some residents expressed dissatisfaction with the changes, as highlighted by Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim.

In an Oct. 4 Facebook post, Assoc. Prof. Lim shared that recent house visits in Compassvale and Anchorvale sparked numerous conversations about housing policies.

“Certain public housing policies have been well-received,” he noted, recalling a couple who lived near one of their daughters, with other children residing within Sengkang GRC. Thanks to the Housing Proximity Grant, the family enjoyed frequent dinners together, a modern take on kampong life, with the added benefits of extra babysitting help and shared meals.

Some residents also shared how they saved money by downsizing from larger homes to smaller, short-lease Flexi units after their children moved out. They appreciated the peace of their neighborhood and the well-connected transport system, which made commuting convenient.

However, not all feedback was positive. Some residents were upset by the sudden introduction of HDB cooling measures. One resident was particularly affected, having just sold his flat and signed an option to purchase a new one, only to feel blindsided by the changes. Another resident felt that the measures focused too much on reducing demand without addressing the supply shortage, stressing that people still need homes.

Assoc. Prof. Lim reassured residents that his team is committed to helping those facing difficulties. “Team Sengkang stands ready to assist any residents who need support with appeals,” he wrote.
