SINGAPORE — A dissatisfied customer recently took to social media to express disappointment over the small portion size of a roasted duck meal he purchased for S$5.30, claiming it was reduced to “kids meal” proportions despite only a 1% GST increase. Jaden Leong shared his experience on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page on Jan 29, posting a photo of the meal he received from the stall Famous HK Style at Kimly Coffee Shop in Sembawang Crescent.
Leong stated that the portion included “a small portion of duck meat and 8-9 grams of char siew cut into razor-thin slices.” When he asked the attendant about the portion size, he was reportedly told, “If you can’t afford to eat it, it’s fine to return the food, I will refund the money.”
Several commenters on Leong’s post agreed that the portion looked unusually small, with some calling it a “kids meal portion” that resembled “leftovers.” Many other customers have shared similar experiences, noting that prices seem to be increasing while portion sizes shrink, a trend known as “shrinkflation.” Some commented that chicken rice and other meal portions they’d ordered recently appeared noticeably thinner.
Shrinkflation has affected not only hawker meals but also packaged foods, with one customer noting that his fries order was only half full. The Independent Singapore has reached out to Leong and the Kimly Group for further comments.
