SINGAPORE – Passengers flying from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on the night of April 26 were left stranded at the airport for several hours after their flight was canceled due to technical issues.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ125 was scheduled to depart Kuala Lumpur at 8:40 PM, arriving in Singapore at 9:50 PM with 159 passengers and 13 crew members on board. An SIA spokesperson informed The Straits Times that the Airbus A350 encountered a technical issue while still on the ground, although details regarding the problem were not disclosed.
After the issue was detected, the aircraft returned to the gate, and all passengers and crew disembarked normally. SIA decided to arrange a relief flight for the affected passengers, as engineers required more time to address the technical difficulties. However, the relief flight was later canceled due to unspecified regulatory reasons.
In a statement, the SIA spokesperson expressed regret, stating, “SIA sincerely apologises for the inconvenience this flight cancellation has caused.” He noted that passengers were given meal vouchers and arrangements were made for them to be placed on other flights from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore the following day.
A passenger who was part of a tour group scheduled to take the flight to Singapore for a subsequent connection to London recounted her experience in a Facebook post. She noted that at 8:45 PM, just 15 minutes after the scheduled departure, the captain announced a technical error. The flight was canceled at 11 PM, and although a relief flight was initially rescheduled for 2:30 AM, it was postponed for two hours before being canceled.
From 11:30 PM to 4:50 AM, she reported that passengers were not provided with any water and had no clear information about their flight status. She highlighted that they were left stranded without hotel accommodations and ultimately missed their connecting flight to London, which was scheduled for 11:45 PM.
Another passenger shared their frustration on Reddit, stating that boarding for the flight began at 7:40 PM, but they were stuck on the plane until 10:30 PM when all passengers were instructed to disembark. Although they were told an alternative flight would arrive at 3:10 AM, it was delayed until 4:30 AM and then ultimately canceled. “Everything is chaos, no duty manager in sight,” he remarked, adding that passengers were only given Starbucks vouchers as compensation.
