SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced a significant change in its meal service, discontinuing the use of carton packaging for meals on medium- and long-haul flights in response to feedback from frequent flyers regarding meal standards. The national carrier stated it would also be reinstating appetizers on mid-haul, long-haul, and ultra-long-haul flights, as well as meal packages for short-haul flights.

This decision follows a trial initiated in March, where meals on select mid- and long-haul flights were served in cartons. The trial attracted criticism from passengers, who perceived the carton meals as a cost-cutting measure that diminished the quality of in-flight dining.

In light of SIA’s recent announcement of a record profit of $2.1 billion, many frequent flyers have called for improvements to in-flight meal quality, better packaging, and the restoration of benefits that were available before the pandemic. Critics argued that as a legacy airline, SIA should maintain premium offerings, and the carton meals, along with the absence of appetizers on some flights, were seen as a step backward.

An SIA spokesperson clarified that certain items, such as cheese, biscuits, and muffins typically included in continental breakfasts, were suspended during the pandemic due to operational challenges and a focus on reducing food waste. These items are set to return on June 1, along with appetizers for economy class passengers on longer flights lasting at least three and a half hours. Short-haul economy passengers will also receive meal kits featuring main courses and desserts starting June 1.

Addressing concerns about the carton packaging, SIA explained that the pilot program aimed to offer more diverse meal options, including laksa, mee siam, and porridge, to enhance the in-flight experience. The design of the carton packaging was intended to retain heat, thus improving the taste and quality of specific foods. Additionally, the carton boxes allow for approximately 30 percent more food compared to plastic containers, resulting in larger meal portions.

Despite the positive feedback from some passengers regarding the taste and variety of food in the carton meals, SIA has decided to cease their use on medium- and long-haul flights after reviewing passenger feedback. However, economy class passengers will still receive meals in cartons for short-haul flights lasting less than three and a half hours.
