SINGAPORE – Singapore’s security is closely linked to Malaysia’s, and due to geographic proximity, developments in Malaysia have direct implications for Singapore’s security landscape, said Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, on June 28. He made the remarks following the recent arrest of eight individuals in Malaysia with suspected links to terrorist groups Daesh and Islamic State (IS), with authorities there identifying potential threats against Malaysia’s king and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
To counter such risks, Singapore collaborates closely with Malaysia, especially in intelligence sharing. Shanmugam emphasized that Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) enforces strict checks at the border, balancing security with efficiency for the 460,000 people crossing daily.
The minister also highlighted that IS ideology continues to resonate in the region, including Singapore, posing ongoing risks. Since 2015, Singapore has apprehended 50 self-radicalized individuals as part of its zero-tolerance stance on extremism. He called for public vigilance, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities to support national security efforts.
