SINGAPORE — As China lifts its pandemic restrictions, the world is bracing for an influx of travellers. Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH), however, announced on Wednesday (Dec 28) that there will be no changes to the current rules for travellers and work pass holders arriving from China.
This decision has sparked debate among netizens. One Reddit user, posting on the r/SingaporeRaw community page, argued that Singapore should restrict travel to and from China. “When Covid started, Singapore delayed acting on travel restrictions with China, which caused a huge surge. With China’s case numbers at historic highs, the government may again be waiting for the green light from China to restrict travel,” wrote Redditor VPee. They also speculated that China has decided to allow unrestricted travel because the domestic situation is already overwhelming.
However, infectious disease experts in Singapore have said there is no need for additional restrictions, pointing to the country’s high vaccination rate. MOH echoed this sentiment, saying, “At this juncture, the prevailing border measures and vaccination requirements for travellers and work pass holders arriving from China remain unchanged.”
Despite this, China is currently experiencing a significant Covid-19 surge, with reports indicating that from Dec 1 to 20, approximately 250 million people—around 18 percent of the country’s population—contracted the virus after pandemic measures were lifted.
While some countries like Japan, Malaysia, and the United States have reintroduced Covid-19 testing requirements for travellers from China, Singapore has kept its existing protocols in place. Unvaccinated travellers to Singapore are still required to undergo pre-departure tests.
Netizens have been vocal in their reactions. One user commented, “Fat hope! I’ve already stocked up on masks, Panadol, and cough syrup. Later, I’m stocking up my pantry too.” Another user predicted that Covid-19 cases would spike after Chinese New Year.
The debate continued with some calling for a balanced approach. “I think appropriate measures need to be taken but not a ban. Many businesses depend on tourists, and more visitors mean more money flowing in. If the spread of Covid doesn’t severely impact our country, we should continue to allow travellers, China or not,” wrote one Redditor.
While opinions remain divided, the Singapore government appears to be sticking to its current stance for now.
