Just as the controversy surrounding Team Singapore at the SEA Games’ Valorant tournament reached a resolution, another issue has emerged from the local esports scene.

In a now-deleted Twitter post on Sunday (May 14), the team representing Singapore in the upcoming Overwatch World Cup announced a complete roster overhaul following internal conflicts. The post from the team’s official account stated, “We are kicking everyone off the team. Gg (Good game).”

The Overwatch World Cup is a prestigious global tournament for Overwatch 2, a five-versus-five first-person shooter developed by Activision Blizzard. The Singapore team, known as the Crimson Manes, was comprised of some of the best Overwatch 2 players in the nation and was set to compete starting in June. However, that future is now uncertain.

Ryan “rXis” Tan, the team’s social media manager, who was responsible for the controversial tweet, expressed in a TwitLonger post: “One month before the tournament… We have no roster, no head coach, and no players who want to play for the team anymore.”

Internal Strife
Ryan detailed that tensions began in early May when player Manfred “Lumi” Sit was barred from participation due to being “in bad standing” with Activision Blizzard, stemming from a toxicity-related ban. Other players, Timotheus “Bubblekitty” Yeo and Figo “Azalea” Chua, left for unspecified reasons. This left a reduced roster, including Joshua “Sgy” Lim, Marcus “Kame” Kwa, and Kim “Overshake” Do-hoon.

A proposed new roster was reportedly agreed upon by Ryan and the general manager, Maya “Ladydeath” Mikazuki. However, after the new lineup’s first practice session, Maya privately informed Joshua and Marcus that they were being removed due to allegations of toxicity, which Ryan claimed was unexpected.

In his post, Ryan criticized Maya for not including him in critical decisions and accused her of misleading him about the team’s direction. He stated, “Imagine getting a chance to play on the World Cup team just for two of your most experienced teammates to get kicked.”

Mixed Opinions
Comments on Reddit suggest that Manfred’s behavior was problematic, with some users recounting negative experiences in competitive games with him. Other allegations indicated that Marcus had verbally attacked fellow team members, further contributing to a toxic environment.

In an open discussion, head coach Jian Qing described how three players had created a hostile atmosphere, prompting complaints from other team members. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a supportive and professional environment, stating, “Not one, not two, but three other members of Team Singapore approached the general manager and me separately on the behaviours of the toxic players.”

As a result, discussions with Blizzard led to the decision to remove the problematic players from the roster. The team is currently in the process of restructuring and moving forward.
