Singapore’s public transit system has been ranked fourth globally, following Hong Kong, Zurich, and Stockholm, according to a study conducted by the Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley.
Singapore secured its position by ranking fourth for urban mobility readiness and public transit, as well as sixth in sustainable mobility. Key factors influencing the rankings included accessibility, affordability, operating hours, crowding, and commute speeds.
Hong Kong topped the list, credited for its low fares, minimal delays, service reliability, and financial self-sufficiency. Both Hong Kong and Singapore were also praised for pioneering new technologies in transportation, such as autonomous buses.
Scandinavian cities, including Oslo, Helsinki, and Stockholm, ranked high for their environmental sustainability, with Oslo’s electric vehicle charging network receiving notable mention.
Singapore has consistently been lauded for its transport infrastructure. In 2020, U.S. travel site Far & Wide ranked Singapore’s public transport as the best in the world, highlighting the convenience of affordable travel passes and the efficiency of its electronic services.
Aiming for continual improvement, Singapore’s long-term goal is to make public transport more accessible. By 2030, about 80% of households are expected to live within a 10-minute walk of a train station, in line with the Land Transport Master Plan’s vision of a fast, well-connected, and convenient system by 2040.
