A restaurant in Singapore has introduced a S$10 surcharge to the final bill if a child of a diner is deemed noisy or disruptive to other patrons. This policy, implemented by Angie’s Oyster Bar & Grill at the Tan Boon Liat Building on Outram Road, has sparked reactions, particularly among mothers who shared the news, which eventually reached the media.

A screenshot of a message from the restaurant to a customer was shared with Mothership, outlining the surcharge for noisy children and the restaurant’s child-unfriendly conditions.

No Baby Chairs Provided
The restaurant’s message, sent to a customer requesting a baby chair during a reservation, indicated that only space for a pram would be provided, as baby chairs were unavailable. The restaurant further noted that while children were welcome to dine in, a S$10 surcharge would be imposed if children were “screaming” or “uncontrolled,” disturbing other guests.

Positive Reviews, But One Complaint
Angie’s Oyster Bar & Grill generally receives high praise for its food and ambience, according to Google and Facebook reviews. However, the restaurant’s child policy was flagged in a TripAdvisor review in August 2022, possibly from the same individual who shared the message about the surcharge.

In response to the TripAdvisor review, the restaurant explained that its staff had received increasing complaints about children running around unattended, causing a safety risk with hot food and sharp cutlery, while also disturbing other diners who prefer a quiet atmosphere.

Restaurant’s Response
In response to Mothership’s queries, Angie’s Oyster Bar & Grill issued a full statement explaining its policy. The restaurant said:

“We pride ourselves on creating a pleasant environment for all guests. Over the last few months, we’ve received more complaints about children running around unattended or disturbing other tables. This is not only dangerous but disrespectful to diners who seek a quiet, comfortable atmosphere.

Although most parents manage the situation when we speak with them, we occasionally encounter instances where nothing is done. This leaves us in an awkward position, explaining to other guests why the situation remains unresolved. Thus, we felt we had no choice but to introduce a ‘penalty’ to handle these unfortunate incidents.

We ask for mutual respect from all guests. Imposing this policy was not our intention to diminish anyone’s experience, but we seek parents’ understanding to ensure a pleasant dining atmosphere for all.”

Angie’s also emphasized that they will continue to “strive for a better dining experience” for all guests, even if it means introducing “creative” policies.

Restaurant Interior
Photos of the restaurant’s interior show a well-decorated establishment with wine bottles on display, located on the second floor of the Tan Boon Liat Building. Guests must navigate a flight of stairs to reach the venue.

Other Child-Restricted Restaurants in Singapore
Angie’s Oyster Bar & Grill is not the first restaurant in Singapore to limit access for children or strollers. Other establishments, such as PS.Cafe at Ann Siang Hill and Ce La Vi at Marina Bay Sands, have also implemented similar restrictions, citing space limitations and design considerations as reasons.
