Singapore is set to enhance its power reliability with the addition of two new 100MW Fast Start generators, announced by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) on April 29. These generators, to be developed and operated by Pacific Light Power (PLP), are expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025, reinforcing the country’s ability to maintain uninterrupted power supply.
The move comes as part of a proactive approach following a 2023 proposal from the Energy Market Company (EMC), aimed at addressing potential disruptions due to technical faults or new large-scale power imports expected over the coming years. EMA emphasized that maintaining a steady balance between electricity supply and demand is crucial to avoid power instability and potential outages.
Fast Start generators are designed to start quickly, minimizing downtime during unexpected outages. EMA chief executive Ngiam Shih Chun highlighted the importance of these backup generators as Singapore transitions to cleaner energy sources: “The Fast Start units by PLP will enhance the resilience of Singapore’s power system, with the added potential to use hydrogen as a cleaner fuel source in the future.”
Pacific Light’s generators will be hydrogen-ready, aligning with Singapore’s shift toward low-carbon alternatives. Additionally, Meranti Power is building two Fast Start gas turbine units capable of generating 340MW each, which can reach full output within 10 minutes, supplementing existing turbine units.
Singapore’s continued investment in hydrogen-ready and fast-start power solutions marks a significant step in securing reliable, resilient energy as the nation works toward a cleaner energy future.
