When her husband, who had left eight years ago, unexpectedly returned, a Singaporean woman and her son came to the realization that they no longer needed him in their lives.
In an anonymous post to the popular confessions page SGWhispers, the woman shared her story about her marriage to a “foreign man.”
“We were together for two years. After we graduated, he proposed to me. Initially, both our families resisted the relationship, but they eventually accepted us and wished us well. We moved back to Singapore, as he agreed to live with me. He found a decent job, as did I. He soon obtained permanent residency, and we officially got married. We bought a resale flat and later had a child,” she recounted.
However, despite believing that things were going smoothly, she noticed her husband growing distant. “He started leaving early and working late, skipping family events and gatherings with friends. He became impatient with me and our son, although he never really yelled. I could tell something was bothering him, but when I asked, he insisted it was nothing. Then one day, he took his passport and disappeared,” she wrote.
After visiting his workplace and learning that even his bosses thought he was on medical leave, the woman filed a police report. Authorities later confirmed that her husband had left the country. Shortly after, she received a message from him, explaining that he was “tired of Asian life and family life” and needed time to recharge and “find his purpose.”
While he promised to send her money, weeks turned into months, and eventually, a year passed. The money he sent was inconsistent, and her messages were left unanswered. His family also distanced themselves, eventually ceasing all communication.
“When I traveled to his hometown, I found that his family had moved, and he was still nowhere to be found. Soon, the money stopped coming, but that was the least of my worries. I felt depressed and helpless, realizing that my husband had abandoned us. I had to lie to my son, telling him that his father was working overseas. I was on medication for depression for a while, but I recovered, thanks to my son,” she shared.
For eight years, she raised her son as a single parent. Then, out of the blue, her husband called last month, saying he had missed both her and their child dearly. However, after his return, the atmosphere at home was awkward, and the woman realized they had moved on without him.
“I was clear now that I wanted a divorce to find closure and move forward with my life,” she wrote, adding that she would discuss this with her husband once he was ready. She ended her post by simply wanting to share her story.
Netizens who commented on her post were skeptical of her husband’s intentions and urged her to proceed with the divorce, sharing their support for her decision.
