A married Singaporean couple, Sim Hwee Kok and Neo Siew Choo, both 47, remain the last individuals unaccounted for following the earthquake that struck Taiwan 12 days ago on April 3, 2024.
The recent discovery of a missing truck driver’s body brings the quake’s death toll to 17. Taiwan authorities continue searching for Sim and Neo, last seen on the Shakadang Trail in Taroko National Park. However, safety concerns led to the suspension of efforts on April 14, after aftershocks sent rocks crashing down, narrowly missing rescue workers and dogs, who evacuated through a nearby stream.
Officials confirmed that rescue efforts would resume when it is safe, and any new evidence is uncovered. The search pause was made in consultation with the couple’s family, who visited the trail on April 14, performing a rite and calling out for the couple’s safe return.
