Singaporean driver Able Wang embarked on an epic road trip from Singapore to China and back, covering 11,000 kilometers in his BMW hatchback over 27 days. Sharing his adventure on the “MY SG Road Trip – Your Malaysia Road Trip Guide” Facebook group, Wang recounted his journey north through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and into China’s Yunnan province, before heading to Yading, Sichuan, and finally making the journey back to Singapore on Oct. 28.
Throughout the trip, Wang drove in temperatures ranging from 0°C to 35°C and at altitudes up to 4,200 meters. He experienced a variety of road conditions, from rugged terrains to smooth highways. Offering tips, he advised those driving in China to rely on Baidu Map or Amap, as Google Maps is often unreliable in the region.
Road Trip Logistics
For those interested in undertaking a similar journey, Wang explained that drivers need a provisional Chinese driving license, a temporary vehicle number, and a guide for the China leg of the trip. Arrangements can be made through Chinese tour companies, which help handle itinerary planning and licensing.
Wang shared that he managed the Thailand portion solo, meeting up with a Thai adventure group for the trip through Laos and China. He noted the challenge of driving in left-hand-drive conditions, making overtaking tricky, especially without a convoy leader.
