Singapore’s badminton mixed doubles team, Terry Hee and Jessica Tan, wrapped up their Olympic debut on a high note, securing a win in their final match against the U.S. team, Vinson Chiu and Jennie Gai, with a score of 21-17, 21-12 at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena. Although this victory placed them third in their group, only the top two teams progressed to the quarter-finals, just keeping Hee and Tan out of the next round.
Reflecting on their Olympic journey, Tan shared, “Reaching the Olympics was an incredible accomplishment for us, but looking back, we could have embraced the experience more. Our drive to win sometimes outweighed the joy of the journey.” Hee added, “In this last match, we let ourselves play more freely and enjoyed every moment, which made a difference in our game.”
The duo faced tough competition, particularly from Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei and China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping, two of the world’s top pairs. Tan acknowledged the pressure, especially during their first match against Malaysia, but emphasized, “It’s important to remember that losses don’t define us.”
Singapore’s badminton hopes continue, however, as singles players Loh Kean Yew and Yeo Jia Min gear up for their knockout matches. With Yeo set to face Mauritius’ Kate Foo Kune and Loh meeting Uriel Canjura from El Salvador, the nation’s Olympic spirit remains high as they push for further success.
