SINGAPORE — Winston Choo, Singapore’s first Chief of Defence Force and a decorated military figure, opens up about his life and sacrifices in the upcoming documentary A Duty to Lead, produced by Reel Lumina. At 82, Choo shares insights from a career spanning 33 years, recounting moments that shaped his legacy, from meeting his wife as a child to overcoming career challenges.
Known for his humility despite his pioneering achievements, Choo was the first military aide-de-camp to President Yusof bin Ishak and the first Singapore Armed Forces officer to attain the rank of major-general. The documentary, set to release on February 2, 2024, offers a personal look at Choo’s sense of duty, highlighting values like courage and integrity.
Director Adrian Tee, whose team self-funds projects like these, describes Choo as a warm and genuine leader who “made a lasting impact” on everyone involved. In A Duty to Lead, Choo speaks candidly about the sacrifices he’s made, such as postponing his marriage and maintaining limited contact with family during official travel, acknowledging that “duty often takes priority.”
The documentary follows Reel Lumina’s mission to celebrate values-driven leaders and to preserve stories that inspire across generations. The full documentary will be available on SMIX from February.
