Construction of Singapore’s largest train and bus depot is about 75 per cent complete and is scheduled to open in 2025, according to a statement from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Tuesday (Sept 20).

Named the East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID), this facility will accommodate the depots for three MRT lines—the Downtown line, the East-West line, and the Thomson-East Coast line—along with a bus depot, all at the same Changi site.

World’s First 4-in-1 Depot
The ECID will be the world’s first four-in-one transport depot. The three MRT depots will be stacked on top of each other: the Downtown line depot will be located underground, the Thomson-East Coast line depot will be at ground level, and the East-West line depot will sit above ground.

Each depot will operate independently and will collectively house about 220 trains. Additionally, the bus depot, which will be a separate structure on the same site, will provide parking for around 760 buses.

By integrating these depots into a single facility, LTA estimates the design will save about 44 hectares of land—roughly the size of 60 football fields.

Green Features
The ECID will incorporate several eco-friendly elements, including solar panels, LED lighting for energy efficiency, and a façade that optimizes natural ventilation and lighting.

Construction Progress
Construction of the ECID began in 2016, and LTA confirmed that work is “progressing well,” with concreting, architectural works, and rail track fitting currently underway. Installation of electrical and maintenance systems is also ongoing.
