Singapore’s MRT network is set for a major expansion with the completion of the Cross Island Line (CRL) phases one and two. Construction for the first phase of the Cross Island Line officially began on Jan. 18, 2023, near Bright Hill Station.

Phase one of the new CRL will span 29km and feature 12 stations. This line will run from Bright Hill to Aviation Park, offering significant time savings for daily commuters.

Currently, the travel time between Bright Hill and Pasir Ris East is approximately 80 minutes. Once the Cross Island Line is operational, this travel time will be slashed to just 30 minutes, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), saving commuters an impressive 50 minutes.

Singapore’s Eighth MRT Line
The Cross Island Line will be Singapore’s eighth MRT line. During the groundbreaking ceremony near Bright Hill Station, Minister for Transport S. Iswaran highlighted the line’s potential to boost connectivity across the island.

“The Cross Island Line will strengthen connectivity between the eastern, western, and north-eastern parts of Singapore and enhance system resilience,” said Iswaran.

The new line is expected to serve a projected daily ridership of 600,000 passengers when phase one opens in 2030.

Deepest MRT Station in Singapore
Tunneling for the first phase will take the tracks nearly 50m underground — the height of a 16-storey HDB block — making it one of the deepest MRT tunnels in Singapore. The Pasir Ris Cross Island Station will be the deepest in the network, at 47m underground.

What’s Next in Phase Two
Phase two of the Cross Island Line will cover approximately 15km and feature six underground stations, including Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast, and Jurong Lake District.

Construction for phase two is expected to commence later in 2023, with the stations set to open by 2032.
