A recent public appearance by Choo Pei Ling, a Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) assistant professor, alongside Marine Parade GRC Members of Parliament (MPs) has sparked speculation that she may be a potential candidate for the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the next General Election. Choo, who is part of SIT’s Health and Social Sciences Cluster, joined MPs Edwin Tong, Tan See Leng, and Seah Kian Peng during a walkabout on March 24, where she was seen interacting with locals at the Marine Parade Central Food Centre.
Photos of the walkabout, posted on Facebook by MP Tan See Leng on March 26, show Choo in a white Marine Parade polo tee, actively engaging with hawkers and residents. This was not her first appearance in Tan’s social media updates, as she also joined him at the Marine Parade Community Centre’s Ramadan Majlis Berbuka Puasa on March 17.
Choo’s presence has fueled rumors that she might replace former Marine Parade MP Tan Chuan-Jin as a PAP candidate. However, in response to inquiries by Lianhe Zaobao, Tan clarified that Choo is currently a grassroots volunteer without any formal positions and stated that it’s premature to discuss her potential candidacy.
Choo herself confirmed that she volunteers for the Marine Parade branch and declined further comment on the speculation. As a neuroscientist and physiotherapist specializing in neurological rehabilitation, Choo serves on the Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) council and chairs the SPA’s Advocacy and Membership Committee. She previously made headlines in 2014 after winning an award from Glasgow Caledonian University to establish a rural neurorehabilitation clinic in Myanmar, where she also completed her doctorate in Clinical and Imaging Neuroscience.
