Singapore’s celebrated runner Soh Rui Yong clinched his fourth national title at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon on Sunday (Dec 3), clocking in at 2:40:34. The 32-year-old triumphed in the men’s local category, securing the S$10,000 top prize.
The marathon’s overall victory went to Kenya’s David Barmasai Tumo, who finished at 2:14:15, earning a S$40,000 prize. Bahrain’s Rose Chelimo led the women’s international category with a 2:37:19 finish. Rachel See took the title for Singaporean women with a time of 3:05:51, marking her fourth win after victories in 2014, 2017, and 2018.
Over 44,000 runners participated in the marathon, which returned as a full event for the first time since 2019 due to Covid-19 interruptions. “It feels great to be national champion again after four years,” Soh shared, adding that he’s working to regain peak marathon shape ahead of the next SEA Games.
In a pre-race message, Soh expressed excitement for running with fellow Singaporeans and gratitude toward IRONMAN Asia and Singapore Athletics for restoring the championship in the post-pandemic era. Following his win, Soh ran into former Workers’ Party NCMP Yee Jenn Jong, who congratulated him and shared the encounter on social media.
Soh continues to hold multiple national records, including the 5,000m, 10,000m, half marathon, and marathon distances.
