A recent study by US-based language-learning company Preply has highlighted Singapore’s most and least costly neighborhoods for expatriates, with Toa Payoh emerging as the most expensive place to live and Ang Mo Kio as the most affordable.
According to the 2024 survey, expats in Toa Payoh earn an average monthly income of US$5,499 (S$7,480) but spend about 91% of it on rent, with typical monthly rentals costing US$5,007. Following Toa Payoh, Bukit Merah (86%), Outram (77%), Kallang (75%), and Geylang (66%) also rank among the priciest areas for expats.
In contrast, more budget-friendly areas include Ang Mo Kio, where only 23% of income goes toward rent, followed by Sembawang (27%), Yishun (28%), Punggol (29%), and Choa Chu Kang (30%). As the data suggests, areas farther from the city center generally offer more affordable rental options.
The study further ranked Singapore as the third-best city globally for expats, tied with Basel, Switzerland. Though monthly living costs in Singapore average US$4,355, expats benefit from ample disposable income with an average monthly salary of US$4,980. Talinn, Estonia, and Bern, Switzerland, claimed the top two spots on the global list.
Singapore also holds the distinction of being the top-rated Asian city for expatriates, lauded for its clean environment, high safety standards, cultural richness, and quality of life. The survey ranked cities based on various metrics, including cost of living, salary, tax rates, internet speed, safety, and cleanliness.
