SINGAPORE — A woman was taken aback by the cost of her ice cream purchase from a street cart vendor near Tampines MRT station, sparking an online discussion over the vendor’s prices. In a Facebook post to the Complaint Singapore group, Lola Quek shared that she paid S$8 for two servings of ice cream, a price she didn’t expect.
After Quek’s post gained traction, the vendor told Mothership that his S$4 ice cream servings come with a larger portion, particularly when paired with bread. Situated near a traffic junction in Tampines, the vendor offers various options, including cones, wafers, and bread-based servings.
Quek noted in her post that there were no visible signs indicating prices on the vendor’s cart, and that she only learned the price after receiving the ice cream. “I wouldn’t have bought if [I] knew beforehand,” she explained, expressing disappointment over the lack of transparency.
Some commenters shared similar experiences, saying they, too, were surprised by the price, while others reported buying from the same vendor at lower costs.
When Mothership visited the vendor’s stall on September 4, he confirmed that he charges S$4 for a larger portion and S$3 for a smaller serving with wafers. The vendor mentioned that regular customers know his prices and accept them, adding that he had just recently marked prices on the side of his cart in response to the feedback.
The vendor also shared that he works from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., taking only a few days off each month. With GST set to increase in 2024, he expects his prices to rise, and he currently has no plans to retire, saying he intends to “work until die.”
