“Apple CEO Tim Cook has commended the ingenuity of Chinese software developers, describing their creativity as unparalleled during an interview with China Daily on Tuesday (March 25). He expressed confidence in China’s growing presence in the global app market, predicting that more of its digital products will gain international recognition.

Cook highlighted the increasing success of Chinese-developed applications, crediting local software engineers for their strong commitment to innovation. Experts believe his remarks underscore China’s evolution beyond being a key manufacturing hub, positioning it as an essential centre for software development within Apple’s ecosystem.

Pan Helin, a member of the Industry and Information Technology Ministry’s Expert Committee for Information and Communication Economy, noted that while Chinese developers historically prioritised domestic success before venturing abroad, they are now aiming directly at international markets.

Cook’s praise, however, sparked mixed reactions. Some questioned China’s contributions to technological breakthroughs, while others defended its impact, pointing to platforms like WeChat, which has inspired attempts at replication in the West.

Kuro Games CEO Li Songlun highlighted the international reach of Chinese gaming, citing the success of Wuthering Waves, which soared to the top of Apple’s App Store charts in 107 countries and regions after launch.

Beyond software, Apple announced a ¥720 million (S$132 million) investment on Monday to bolster clean energy production in China. This initiative will establish the second China Clean Energy Fund, building upon a similar programme launched in 2018. The new fund aims to add approximately 550,000 megawatt-hours of wind and solar power to China’s grid annually.

According to Cook, two-thirds of Apple’s Chinese supply chain already operates on renewable energy, and over 80 per cent of its top 200 suppliers maintain manufacturing bases in the country. Apple COO Jeff Williams added that suppliers in China are making significant strides in smart and sustainable production, setting the stage for further advancements over the next three decades.

Bai Ming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, stated that China’s unparalleled production capabilities and dedication to innovation will remain a driving force for major global technology firms like Apple.”
