Two women, aged 28 and 31, were arrested on Dec. 23 in Singapore for allegedly attempting to evade a roadblock and swapping seats between driver and passenger. Traffic Police had set up a roadblock along Upper Cross Street toward the Central Expressway when they noticed a vehicle stopping at a distance. As officers approached, the driver reversed and sped off, then allegedly switched seats with the passenger.

The 28-year-old, who owns the car, was detained for suspected drink-driving, permitting another person to drive without a licence or insurance, and obstructing justice. Her companion, the 31-year-old who was behind the wheel, was also arrested for suspected drink-driving, evading a roadblock, driving without a licence or insurance, and obstructing justice.

The women were part of an island-wide operation that saw 18 drivers arrested for drink-driving-related offences, with 56 motorists stopped and tested at various checkpoints. A total of 17 others, aged 23 to 70, failed the alcohol test, with the highest breath test measuring 97 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters, nearly three times the legal limit.

Penalties
For driving under the influence, penalties range from a fine of S$2,000 to S$10,000, a jail term of up to 12 months, or both, along with potential driving disqualification. Evasion of a roadblock carries a fine up to S$10,000 and a maximum prison term of seven years. Driving without a licence or insurance also carries hefty fines and possible jail time.
