A foreign domestic worker shared in a Facebook post that she felt “uncomfortable and humiliated” due to the way her employer’s 14-year-old son had treated her for over two years.
In her anonymous post to the FDW in Singapore (working conditions forum), the helper explained that while she had worked with the family for six years, her experience was mostly positive, except for her interactions with the teenage boy. She revealed that he often looked at her with suspicion, accusing her of stealing his belongings and eating his food. Even when nothing was missing, he would continue to blame her, despite her innocence.
The situation escalated when the boy began spitting on food in the fridge to prevent her from eating it. The helper reported the boy’s actions to her employer, but no changes were made to his behavior.
“I feel uncomfortable and humiliated,” the helper wrote in her post. “I don’t know what to do right now, facing someone who never respects me every day.”
Despite the toxic treatment, the helper mentioned that she was hesitant to leave the family, as she had cared for the two younger children since they were babies and had grown attached to them.
In the comments section of her post, she disclosed that the boy’s mistreatment had been going on for two years, describing how he treated her “like an enemy.” Fellow helpers in the group urged her to consider whether her attachment to the younger children was worth the ongoing humiliation. Many encouraged her to leave and seek another employer.
Earlier this year, another foreign domestic worker sought advice on dealing with irregular work hours and rude children in a similar forum. The post highlighted the common challenges domestic workers face, despite having some positive aspects of their employment.
