SINGAPORE: Despite Singapore’s progress as a multicultural nation, some Singaporeans are questioning why interracial relationships continue to attract controversy. The debate was recently reignited by a Reddit post from user ‘the_sigma_snake,’ who shared that a Chinese friend dating an Indian man faces regular derogatory comments.

The Reddit user described their friend, a local Chinese woman who is active on social media, as receiving comments like “he kidnap you ah?” and “no Chinese guys will want you.” According to the user, the friend’s boyfriend is accustomed to such remarks, but the intensity of casual racism surrounding their relationship was surprising. “I’ve always thought our country’s strength lay in our racial harmony,” the poster wrote, noting a disconnect between the ideal and reality.

Commenters on the thread pointed out that, while younger generations may be more open-minded, racist attitudes still persist, particularly among older Singaporeans. One mixed-race commenter recounted a lifetime of such comments, noting that while her parents have been happily married for nearly five decades, she and her siblings have regularly encountered racist remarks.

Others echoed similar experiences, with one Indian woman sharing how her Chinese partner initially faced resistance from his family. Over time, she was accepted as part of the family, though she believes the preference for a Chinese daughter-in-law still remains. In another post, a Singaporean woman of Indian descent remarked that she too had encountered prejudice in university, where classmates saw her attractiveness as lower because of her ethnicity.

Meanwhile, others feel that much of the racism in Singapore exists as “casual” prejudice. A commenter noted, “Some people say it’s ‘just words’—but words matter.” Another Redditor argued that negative comments on social media do not necessarily reflect the attitudes of society as a whole, attributing some of the remarks to people hiding behind screens.

The online discourse around interracial relationships sheds light on a broader issue: while Singapore has come a long way as a multiracial society, acceptance remains uneven, often complicated by ingrained attitudes. As the nation continues its journey towards racial harmony, these discussions highlight the importance of moving beyond tolerance to embrace true inclusivity and mutual respect.
