A woman’s LinkedIn post criticizing residents of Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats has drawn significant backlash online. On May 22, 2023, user Satwant Kaur, who describes herself as a “nationalist,” made sweeping remarks about the differences between “HDB people” and those living in private residences, claiming it was “necessary to limit contact” with the former.
Kaur’s post, which has since been deleted along with her profile, stated that “HDB people” prioritize money over values. While the post initially went unnoticed, it gained traction after a young Singaporean, university undergraduate Nadine Lee, called her out for her comments.
In her response, Lee emphasized the “unique culture” of HDB residents, referring to it as the “gainfully earned right to have proper shelter and someplace you can call yours.” She pointed out that the majority of Singaporeans are striving to eliminate elitist attitudes and treat each other well, while Kaur seemed to advocate for division.
Other LinkedIn users echoed Lee’s sentiments, joining the conversation to express their disapproval of Kaur’s views.
Kaur, however, did not take the criticism well and continued to double down on her opinions in follow-up comments before ultimately deleting her posts and profile.
The situation has sparked heated discussions on other platforms as well. Moderators on the subreddit r/Singapore locked a thread that garnered over 2,000 upvotes after a flood of comments. Similarly, the thread on r/LinkedInLunatics accumulated over 2,500 upvotes and 450 comments, with multiple discussions appearing on the HardwareZone forum.
