The work may be demanding, but private-hire vehicle driver Dorson Chua isn’t complaining about his impressive earnings of nearly $3,000 every week. In a nine-second TikTok video posted on July 12, Chua shared his weekly earnings, which average around $2,900, with his highest week reaching about $3,300, thanks to over $850 in incentives.
While the average income for private-hire vehicle (PHV) drivers hovers around $200 daily—amounting to about $1,000 weekly if they work five days—Chua believes in the value of hard work. “You’ll never go hungry if you work hard in Singapore,” he wrote in the video caption. “Let’s all work hard together!”
In the comments section, he explained what “working hard” entails for him: “12 hours a day,” during which he completes around 30 trips to achieve his impressive weekly payout.
Chua transitioned to driving for Grab from a landscaping career last September, where he previously earned about $5,000 a month. To manage the long hours on the road, he typically takes two short meal breaks of half an hour each day.
It’s important to note that driver fatigue significantly contributes to road accidents and fatalities. Grab cites research indicating that being awake for 17 hours affects driving ability similarly to alcohol consumption. The early signs of fatigue include poor concentration, yawning, and oversteering. To combat this, Grab advises drivers to take a minimum seven-hour break after working more than 11 hours.
