SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party (WP) MP Leon Perera responded to remarks made by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong about the opposition’s role in providing alternative policies. During a speech in Parliament on Apr. 18, Perera asserted that the WP has been presenting concrete alternative ideas, contrary to Wong’s earlier statements.
Wong had urged the opposition to present a serious alternative agenda, rather than “opportunistic or populist” ideas. In response, Perera said, “We have been doing this,” highlighting that the WP has proposed policies differing significantly from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). Examples include slowing the growth of reserves to enhance social justice and reducing Build-to-Order (BTO) flat prices by adjusting the land valuation formula.
Perera also called for honest political debates, urging against “flashy soundbites” that misrepresent opposition ideas. He emphasized that differences in opinion do not equate to polarisation, stressing the need for respectful discourse where opposing views are fairly considered.
In his speech, Perera referenced President Halimah Yacob’s call for an active citizenry, noting the importance of transparency and informed trust. He argued that citizens should not “blindly trust” political leadership, and advocated for fostering critical thinking in Singapore’s populace. Perera suggested initiatives like the creation of an ombudsman and allowing opposition MPs to engage with students in schools to build a politically educated society.
Meanwhile, Workers’ Party Chair Sylvia Lim also addressed ageism, calling for more inclusive intergenerational interactions and refraining from ageist language in public discourse. Lim supported initiatives like integrating senior and family flats in HDB blocks to promote cross-generational engagement.
Both speeches highlight the WP’s focus on providing thoughtful, structured alternatives to the government’s policies while promoting respectful political dialogue.
