The body of a 73-year-old woman was discovered in her Bedok flat on Wednesday (11 December) following assistance from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in helping police gain entry to the property. The discovery came after a neighbour reported a strong foul smell and an unusual number of cockroaches coming from the unit.
The flat, located at Blk 23 Chai Chee Road, was described as cluttered and difficult to access. A report by Shin Min Daily News noted that the wooden door had been completely removed and set aside, while the metal gate appeared to have been forced open.
Residents told Shin Min that the woman lived alone and frequently brought items into her home. Despite this, neighbours said she rarely interacted with others and hardly ventured outdoors. One unnamed female neighbour revealed that she had not seen the woman for at least two weeks, although family members, friends and volunteers occasionally visited her.
After the pungent smell and sight of cockroaches prompted a report to the town council, workers attempted to contact her but received no response.
The police confirmed they were alerted to an “unnatural death” at approximately 12:10pm on Wednesday. Upon entering the home, they found the woman motionless and later pronounced her dead.
Preliminary investigations indicate that there is no suspicion of foul play, though enquiries are ongoing.
