SINGAPORE — A private-hire driver in Singapore has been fined $3,000 for directing racist comments toward a passenger during a dispute over drop-off location in September. The passenger, a 46-year-old woman, recorded the incident and shared it on social media, where the driver, Peh Boon Hua, 54, was heard saying, “You are Indian, I’m Chinese… You are the very worst kind.”
The disagreement occurred after the Tada app malfunctioned, resulting in a mix-up with the drop-off location. The victim, who was traveling with her nine-year-old daughter, felt threatened by Peh’s remarks and reported the incident to the police the following day. The court fined Peh $3,000 under the Protection from Harassment Act.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sheldon Lim stated, “The overtly racial nature of the accused’s insults is unacceptable… There is no place for such language in Singapore,” emphasizing the importance of deterrence in the sentencing. Tada permanently banned Peh from its platform, asserting that his remarks were “completely unacceptable within Tada’s community guidelines and ethos.”
