A unique outdoor fixture resembling a Japanese sauna at a Serangoon HDB flat has sparked curiosity and raised concerns online. The setup, complete with a door, window, and a decorative frame displaying the Mandarin word for “home,” was first noticed when a Reddit user posted a photo on July 9, captioned, “Is that an onsen spa at an HDB [block]?”
Located on the 12th floor of a Serangoon Central block, the structure includes a platform surrounded by potted plants and greenery. It’s reportedly used for storage, with items like laundry detergent placed on top.
Residents have shared mixed reactions. Some were amazed by the “cool” design, while others raised legality concerns, with many netizens speculating it might violate public space regulations. According to one user, “It blocks the actual gate with the unit number… It’s definitely not legal.”
The Marine Parade Town Council acknowledged they have previously engaged with the resident to reduce corridor clutter, noting that the homeowner had cooperated to some extent. However, they will now work to have the structure removed and will continue to monitor the situation.
Regulations require common corridors in HDB estates to have a clear passage of at least 1.2 meters and prohibit permanent structures or obstructive storage in public areas. HDB guidelines further state that unauthorized installations encroaching into public spaces or creating hazards are not allowed.
