Wildlife enthusiast Andy Chew got more than he bargained for during his visit to the Botanic Gardens on March 27. Hoping to see two recently hatched black swan cygnets, he was thrilled to witness a new chick emerging from its egg. So far, four fluffy cygnets have hatched, charming both visitors and nature lovers.

These black swans, native to Western Australia, reside at the Botanic Gardens’ Eco-Lake. Photography enthusiast Daniel Neo first spotted them nesting back in December 2023, joking about the arrival of “ugly ducklings” in a Facebook post. Thirteen weeks later, he returned to see the first hatchling, capturing a beautiful moment for the wildlife community.

Chew shared a video of his experience, cheering on the scruffy-looking chick as it struggled free from its egg, calling out, “Hello! Welcome to the world!” The cygnets are now under the care of the National Parks Board (NParks) in an enclosed nursery, ensuring their safety as they grow.
