A rugby match between Singapore’s Oldham Rugby Club and Saints Rugby Football Club on Nov. 11, 2023, took an unexpected turn when a brawl erupted after a Saints player kicked an unmoving Oldham player lying on the ground. Following the altercation, two players were sent off, and the Singapore Rugby Union (SRU) has announced an investigation into the incident.

Incident Details

In the second half of the match, both a Saints and Oldham player collided while attempting to catch a kicked ball. After the collision, the Oldham player lay motionless, while the Saints player appeared uninjured. Moments later, the Saints’ No. 27 kicked the Oldham player, sparking a scuffle between multiple players from both teams.

Medics and coaches rushed onto the field to break up the fight and attend to the injured Oldham player, who was subsequently stretchered off. Following a consultation with the players, the referee sent off Saints No. 27 and Oldham No. 14. The players shook hands before leaving the field.

SRU’s Response

In a statement, the SRU confirmed that all players received appropriate medical care and that both clubs resolved the incident amicably. The SRU emphasized its “strict stance” against foul play, assuring the community that the incident will be reviewed through a formal judiciary process led by an independent board.

SRU general manager Sidney Kumar noted that the Oldham player did not sustain serious injuries. Both players have since apologized, and Kumar expressed optimism that they will learn and move forward from the incident.
