JOHOR – As Singapore faces a surge in Covid-19 cases, the neighboring state of Johor is also experiencing a steady rise. According to The Star, Covid-19 cases in Johor have been increasing over the past eight weeks, with recent data showing a continuing upward trend.

On June 10, Johor’s health and environment committee chairman, Ling Tian Soon, reported 263 cases in the week of June 3 to June 9, a 5.6% increase from the previous week’s 249 cases. Ling noted that the surge began in mid-April, with a significant 220.6% increase in cases from early April to mid-May.

Johor’s recent cases have primarily come from Johor Bahru, followed by Batu Pahat, Kulai, and Muar. The current total Covid-19 cases in the state stand at 414,401, with 14 patients currently receiving hospital care, though none are in the ICU. Ling cautioned that Johor’s Covid-19 cases are expected to keep rising, mirroring Singapore’s increase, fueled by new sub-variants.

In May 2024, Singapore’s weekly cases nearly doubled, reaching 25,900 in early May. In response, Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) urged individuals to exercise personal responsibility, including maintaining good hygiene, minimizing social interactions when unwell, and wearing masks if vulnerable in crowded areas. During the June travel season, MOH has also encouraged travelers to take necessary precautions.

In a June 3 statement, MOH reminded the public that “Covid-19 waves occur from time to time” and emphasized the importance of vaccination in reducing severe illness and fatalities.
