Opposition leader and lawyer Lim Tean expressed his shock in a Facebook post late Saturday night (Apr 9) after discovering a 25 per cent price hike for economy rice—a staple meal for many Singaporeans—at a stall he frequents.

“For many, it is the closest thing to home-cooked food… A dish used to cost $2 but now costs $2.50,” he shared.

Lim then invited his followers to share their experiences with rising prices affecting their daily lives.

As the head of the People’s Voice party, Lim emphasized that while a 25 per cent increase may not seem like much to the wealthy, it represents a significant burden for those with lower incomes.

“Imagine a worker earning $1,300 (before CPF deduction) who eats economy rice and now has to pay 25 per cent more for his meals,” Lim said, adding, “Let’s see what the PAP does to bring down inflation. Till now, I have not seen them do anything.”

The rise in food prices, driven by global supply chain disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, regional climate challenges, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has been ongoing since last year.

Netizens responded to Lim’s post, confirming that they, too, have seen increases in their grocery and meal costs. One woman noted that her grocery bill had increased by $30, while others shared their personal experiences with higher prices at food establishments and markets.
