A photo of a hunchbacked elderly man working as a GrabFood delivery rider in Choa Chu Kang has gone viral online, sparking both concern and admiration from netizens. The image, shared by Facebook user Nazri Johari on Feb 13, praised the man for his determination, stating: “Felt pity for him but at the same time felt proud of him. Cause he still has that energy and responsibilities towards himself.”
The 64-year-old man was later interviewed by a Shin Min Daily News reporter on Feb 15, near Choa Chu Kang MRT station. He revealed that he used to work as a cleaner in Redhill before switching to food delivery a few months ago. Living alone in Bukit Panjang, he fulfills his deliveries on foot, using a trolley to transport orders.
Due to his limited mobility, it takes him up to an hour to complete a single delivery, restricting his earnings. When asked how many deliveries he completes in a day, he politely declined to answer. He also shared that he had to spend $200 to buy a smartphone and delivery gear to get started with the app. According to Grab’s website, food delivery partners must purchase a gear package, which includes a sling bag, halal food bag, and T-shirts, costing $60.
Despite challenges, including navigating the app, he received help from a fellow delivery woman who regularly assists him, even helping transfer his earnings to his bank account. A newspaper vendor also shared that, regardless of rain or shine, the elderly man continues to work tirelessly.
