SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim (Sengkang GRC) shared insights into his workout strategy in a Facebook post on Wednesday morning (May 17), emphasizing the significance of strength training, particularly as we age.
In his post, Jamus Lim highlighted the benefits of compound lifts—including bench presses, overhead presses, pull-ups, deadlifts, and squats. He noted that these exercises can be performed using a barbell and rack, eliminating the need for elaborate gym equipment.
He stated, “These exercises build musculature, which many (including myself, when I was younger) pursue for aesthetic reasons. There’s nothing wrong with that, per se (although my wife doesn’t like bulky guys, so that’s another motivation for me not to get massive).”
Jamus Lim further explained that strength training is vital for maintaining a good quality of life as one ages, referencing evidence suggesting it may even contribute to longevity. “As I’ve gotten older, my workouts have enabled me to carry my three-year-old daughter and engage with her in play. Even simple activities become easier when strength isn’t a limiting factor,” he added.
He concluded his post by recommending that everyone incorporate a strength training routine into their fitness regimen to enhance their well-being for the sake of their families.
His post resonated with many netizens, prompting questions about his specific strength training routines. One user asked, “Dr. Jamus, can you share the reps and sets you do?” Another inquired, “How much can you bench?” A humorous response suggested that Assoc Prof Lim “benches the weight of Sengkang,” which garnered appreciation from others.
Even national marathoner Soh Rui Yong expressed his approval of Lim’s message.
