SINGAPORE: In a scene reminiscent of a gang-style showdown, two groups of otters were caught on video in what appeared to be a playful brawl. The footage shows five otters rushing toward a group of four otters hiding in a hole near a tree, taunting them by approaching and retreating multiple times.
When the second group emerged from the hole, the first group quickly ran off toward some bushes with their rivals in hot pursuit.
The video, posted on the Singapore Incidents Instagram page on Sunday (Apr 23), has since garnered over 500 likes.
Viewers found the playful interaction amusing, with one netizen commenting, “Gang gang,” while another joked, “I can imagine the song ‘Bad’ by Michael Jackson playing in the background.”
However, not everyone was entertained. One user pointed out the real problem otters pose for homeowners with fish ponds, writing, “Don’t laugh, these animals are a threat for house owners with expensive koi fish, why do we still treat those animals like pets?”
Indeed, Singapore’s otter population, while adored by many, has been known to cause damage. Last year in Hougang, a man lost his rare ryukin goldfish, worth $100 each, to an otter attack, with damages amounting to $5,000. In March, another family’s prized koi fish met a similar fate.
