SINGAPORE — The 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI) report has ranked Singapore as the sixth most peaceful country in the world, an advancement from the ninth position in 2022. The GPI, which assesses 163 nations and nearly 99.7 per cent of the world’s population, evaluates peacefulness based on three core areas: Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Conflict, and Militarisation.
While global peace has declined by 0.42 per cent on average this year, marking the ninth consecutive year of deterioration, Singapore’s rise stands out positively. Of the 163 countries studied, 84 saw an improvement in peace levels, while 79 experienced a decline, with the overall trend showing more deterioration than gains.
In the Asia-Pacific, peacefulness rose by 0.32 per cent due to enhancements in safety, reduced militarisation, and fewer violent demonstrations. Singapore ranks just after New Zealand, which led the region, with Japan following closely behind.
Globally, the top five most peaceful nations are Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria, while Portugal, Slovenia, Japan, and Switzerland join Singapore in the top ten.
