SINGAPORE — Presently, cyclists in Singapore who ride in groups exceeding the allowed size face a fine of S$150. However, one concerned citizen is calling for a significantly higher penalty of S$1,000 to better deter dangerous cycling practices.
In a recent joint operation along Clementi Road and West Coast Highway on May 25, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Traffic Police stopped over 25 cyclists riding in groups larger than permitted, as reported by The Straits Times.
Chia Eu Foong, a Singaporean advocating for safer cycling practices, commented that the current S$150 fine may be too lenient. “Many of these cyclists invest thousands in their bicycles,” Chia noted, “so a S$150 fine may not deter them.” He believes that raising the penalty to S$1,000 would more effectively encourage road safety.
Chia also highlighted that cyclists riding in large groups increase risks on the road, as drivers may struggle to predict their sudden lane changes or movement. This creates potential hazards, especially for smaller vehicles and motorists forced to change lanes abruptly.
This operation follows a similar enforcement effort by LTA and the Traffic Police in late April to early May, which caught 16 cyclists violating group size limits and another six riding bicycles without functioning brakes.
